상하이 밴가드 갤러리 (Vanguard Gallery)는 2022년 8월 27일 서울에서 첫 번째 팝업 전시회 『낮 이후 밤』을 개최한다. 『낮 이후 밤』은 안토니 문타다스 (Antoni MUNTADAS) 와 탕차오(TANG Chao)의 작품을 엄선하여 소개하며, 전시는 2022년 10월 30일까지 진행한다.

국제적인 명성을 가진 안토니 문타다스 (Antoni MUNTADAS b.1942)는 개념 예술의 선구자로 국내에 알려져 있으며, 문타다스의 영상에 대한 탐구와 성찰은 오늘날까지 끊임없이 지속되고 있다. 이번 전시를 위해 선정된 문타다스의 초기 작품이자 기념비적인 작품 「행위들(Actions)」(1972)은 물질과 신체의 접촉 및 인식을 통한 지각적 감수성(촉각, 후각, 미각)과 관련된 일련의 경험을 제시한다. 본 작업은 인지 과정에서 관객의 잠재적 감각의 활성화를 통해 관객을 능동적 주체로 전환시키려는 작가의 끊임없는 시도를 보여준다.

탕 차오(TANG Chao b.1990)는 차세대 중국의 주요 현대미술가로 활동하고 있다. 공연 또는 연극적 접근을 통합한 탕 차오의 비디오 작업들은 간결하며 유동적인 언어를 통해 작품의 톤과 리듬을 표현하며 관객의 주목을 받고 있다. 「희미한 빛(Shimmer)」(2021)은 자연과 일상생활의 사소한 발견으로부터 환상적 우주의 반짝임을 표현한다. 「흑진주(Black Pearl)」(2021)에서 작가는 픽셀화된 비디오 게임 클립을 역사적 몽타주로 편집하고 불의 이미지를 되풀이하는 내러티브 연결고리로 사용한다. 두 작품의 모든 자료는 온라인에서 소싱되거나 생성된 후 재배열, 재처리 및 저해상도(low-fi) 콜라주로 변환되어 관객의 호기심을 자극한다. ● 『낮 이후 밤』 전시는 다른 세대와 다양한 접근 방식, 새로운 관점에서 메아리치는 두 작가의 강렬한 대화를 드러낸다. 두 작가들의 다른 울림의 공통된 기저엔 밤과 낮, 그림자와 빛으로 상상하는 두 예술가들의 끊임없는 열망이 자리한다. ■ 밴가드 갤러리

Antoni MUNTADAS (b.1942) is an internationally acclaimed pioneer of conceptual art whose exploration and reflection on moving images continue to present day. The work selected for this exhibit, Actions (1972), Muntadas' earliest but emblematic creation, proposes a set of experiences articulated around perceptual sensitization – touch, smell, and taste – through the contact and recognition of materials and bodies. Actions demonstrates Muntadas' perpetual intention in activating the viewers' sub-sensorial potentials, which transform the spectators into active subjects during the cognitive process.

TANG Chao (b.1990) is considered a leading artist among his generation, working primarily with video while integrating performative or theatrical approaches. Tang articulates the tone and rhythm of his works through a succinct and fluid language: Shimmer (2021) composes an illusory universe where the viewers are enabled to discover trivial things shimmering in corners of everyday life, from natural creations to the invented and constructed human world; In Black Pearl (2021), Tang edits pixelated video game clips into a historical montage, with the imagery of fire as an reoccurring narrative thread. All the materials of the two works are sourced or generated online, then rearranged, reprocessed and converted into lo-fi collages to stimulate the viewer's own interpretation. ■ Vanguard Gallery

Vanguard Gallery was founded in 2004 in Shanghai. The gallery has been devoted to discovering and promoting emerging contemporary artists since its establishment. Vanguard Gallery has served as a platform for exposure and practice for young artists, and has discovered many of whom are active participants today in constructing the Asian contemporary art discourse. In recent years Artists from different countries and generations have joined Vanguard, which provides a diverse selection of works both in forms and concepts.
