혼돈의 바다-부유하는 덩어리들 ● 물 속의 이미지들, 자유로움과 고요함 뒤에 또 다른 나레이션을 담고 있다. 화면을 채운 덩어리들은 덕지덕지 달라 붙어 있거나, 마치 유령처럼 특별한 활동이나 기능이 없이 물 속을 부유한다. 때로는 반인 반수와도 같이 보이는 형체들은 뒤엉키고, 분리되어 변형된 왜곡을 보인다. 이것은 비대하거나 왜소하게 마른 두 가지의 몸으로 시각적 상이함을 느끼게 한다. 그러나 매끈하게 정제되어 있지 않은 날 것처럼 투박하게 닮아있는 덩어리로 표현 된 형체에서 인간의 몸이라는 예측을 가능하게 한다. 의식과 무의식의 혼합을 통한 새로운 대상의 출현은 낯선 가능성과 함께 혼성 된 가상성의 공간으로 다양한 상상을 유추하게 하고 새로운 긴장감을 안겨준다.

배경이 되는 물은 신화나 종교적인 관점에서 우주가 시작되기 전에 거대한 힘의 근원으로써 인식되어 '혼돈의 시대'라고 정의된다. 소극적인 부드러움과 동시에, 막강한 변형의 힘과 순수한 잠재적 가능성을 통한 무한 확장이 가능하고, 엄청난 파괴력을 지닌다. 과거 리바이어던(Leviathan)과 같은 거대한 바다 생물체로 표현 되기도 할 만큼, 평온함과 파괴력을 동시에 지녀 다분히 이중적이고 다중성이 있다. 이것은 마치 인간의 모습과 닮아, 물과 인체가 혼성이 될 수 있는 충분한 타당성과 설득력을 가지고 있다.

작가는 그간 다소 소극적으로 특정 물체나 대상에 인간의 모습을 대리시켜, 은유적인 표현방식으로 인간의 본질에 대한 물음을 던져왔다. 그러나 신작「WOZU-why」는 실존하는 인물을 모델로 하고, 자신 또한 발가벗은 채 「WOZU-why」라는 세계에 과감히 몸을 던진다. 그가 만든 가상의 세계에서의 형상(몸)과 배경(물)의 결합에서는 구분과 차이, 대립도 없는, 도플갱어가 함께 존재하여 닮은 듯 하지만 각기 다양성을 드러낸다.

사진으로 자신만의 몽환적인 세계를 표현하는데 있어 디지털과 아날로그의 결합 방식은 적합하다. 작업은 물과 신체를 주제로 원초적이며 단순 명료한 표현이다. 그러나 새로운 시각적 방법으로 유출된 그의 혼성의 세계는 아름답지 만은 않다. 독일어로 '무엇 때문에' 라는 의미로 해석되는 'WOZU'는 나약하고 불완전하여 발생되는 다양한 인간의 정신을 대변하고 있다. 이것은 인간이기에 끊어낼 수 없는 운명에 대한 존재론적 고찰이기도 하다. 인간은 혼돈에서 시작 한다. 탄생부터 죽음에 이르기까지 물음 또한 멈출 수 없다. 이처럼 끊임없는 질문들이 어쩌면 우리가 살아가는 존재의 이유이자 의미가 될지도 모른다. 지금도 우리는 불완전함으로 혼돈의 세상을 부유하며 살아간다. ■ 배은혜

Sea of confusion – floating lumps ● Images under water, they contain another narration behind unconventionality and tranquilness. Lumps filling the screen clung to each other here and there or floating in water just like ghost without any specific activity and function. Sometimes, objects looking like half-human and half-beast show deformed distortion as they got entangled and separated. This makes audience feel visual difference with 2 bodies: one is obesity and the other is small and skinny. However, the shape expressed by rough lump roughly resembling raw material which is not purified makes it possible to predict it's a human body. Advent of a new subject through mixing with consciousness and unconsciousness makes audience infer various imaginations as a space of virtualities along with unfamiliar possibility and gives new tension to people. ● Water in the background is a source of huge power before universe was started in a viewpoint of myth and religion and it is defined as 'Era of confusion' It has passive smoothness and also infinitely extendable through huge power of change and pure potential possibility giving tremendous destructive power. This has pretty much multiple aspects since it has tranquilness and destructive power enough to be expressed as a sea creature just like Leviathan in the past. These multiple aspects, as they look like an appearance of human being, have enough feasibility and persuasive power which are mingled with water and human body. ● The author has ever been more or less passively casting questions about essence of human beings by metaphorical ｅxpression which replaced specific objects and subjects with appearance of human being. However, in his new art work 「wozu-why」, actually existing model appears, and the model becomes naked and throws its body bravely onto a world of 「wozu-why」 ● Combination with shapes (body) and background (water) in his virtual world exposes diversity although they are resembled together without distinction, difference and conflict just as doppelganger co-exists. ● But it is very primitive, simple and clarified only by simple combination with water and body through combination of digital and analogue. Sufficient visual satisfaction shows fantastic and dreamlike world. But his mixed world is not always beautiful. 'Wozu' which is interpreted as "What for" by German language means continuous ontological contemplation for human being who is under agony, weak and imperfect. ● Human beings are started from confusion. And they are destined not to stop ontological question until they reach death. Maybe, those continuous questions might be meaning of our existence in daily life. Therefore, we are still imperfect and living together floating in a world of confusion. ■ BAEEUNHYE
