대학을 졸업한 후 자아 찾기의 명목으로 방황하는 시간을 보냈다. 마치 사춘기 청소년들이 학교라는 굴레를 벗어나면 진짜 '나'와 조우할 이상적인 삶이 기다리고 있다고 믿듯이 본인 또한 당장 눈앞에 있는 것들을 벗어나면 스스로의 본질을 찾을 수 있을 거라 생각한 적이 있었다. 잠시나마 그토록 탈피하고 싶던 현실과 시선을 벗어난 것처럼 보였지만 새로운 환경에 동화되려 하는 스스로를 발견하면서 방황은 순환처럼 찾아온다는 것을 깨닫게 되었다. 이 시기에 에리히 프롬의 「자유로부터의 도피」를 접하게 되었고, '바로 이 자유가 인간을 고독과 불안에 빠뜨리고 개인이 보잘 것 없고 무력하다는 느낌으로 인간을 압도한다'(91p)는 단락에서 물의 이미지를 떠올릴 수 있었다. 이렇게 물위에 여행가방과 함께 표류한 사람들의 형상을 그리는 작업을 시작하게 되었는데, 여기서 여행 가방은 물리적으로 어느 한 공간으로부터의 이동, 탈피 한다는 상징과 함께 소유자가 속해 있던 공간과 생활에 밀접하게 연결되고 있다는 점이 자유와 소속을 동시에 표현할 수 있어 작품의 소재로 종종 등장한다. 현실에 대한 도피로 선택한 자유는 곧 내면에 고독한 감정을 불러내고, 우리는 그 감정에 흐름에 표류하는 나약한 존재라는 것을 이야기 하고 자 했다. 이때의 생각과 작업들은 작업의 방향과 컨셉을 다지는 초석이 되었다.

불현듯 느끼게 되는 권태와 집단의 분위기로 인해 위축된 스스로의 모습에 불만과 결핍을 느끼는 것은 더 이상 현대인에게 새삼스러운 일도 아닐 것이다. 타자와 자아 사이의 간극에서 오는 우울함이나 고독과 같은 불가항력적인 감정은 모든 세대에 걸쳐서 느끼고 축적해온 감정이며, 타인과의 관계 속에 우리는 언제나 자아 찾기와 상실을 반복하며 삶을 영유해오고 있다. 나의 작업도 이러한 과정의 연장선에 있다. 내면을 탐구하던 작업을 해체하고 다시 조합하여 이미지를 만들어 내는 현재의 꼴라주 작업은 그 과정이 마치 나의 모습을 통해 타인의 모습을 반추하는 것 같아 매력적으로 다가왔다. 이 이미지들은 본인의 주변인들부터 미디어 속 우연히 접한 유명인들을 포함하고 있다. 친밀하고 평범하게 느껴졌던 그들이 낯설고 독특하게 비춰 지기도 하고 특별하고 유일한 피사체로 느껴졌던 또 다른 그들이 익명의 모습으로 드러난다. 시선의 주체이자 객체인 인물들은 각자가 모여 서로가 유대관계를 형성하지 않다 하더라도 익숙하지만 낯선 무리의 군중이 된다. 나는 이러한 작업을 통해 마치 보호색을 띄는 개체처럼 주어진 환경에 끊임없이 적응해야 하는 시대의 우리를 표현하고자 한다. ■ 김진

After graduating from college, I spent time to wander to go find myself. At that time, I thought I could find myself if I got out from my obligations, like an adolescent who believe there is an ideal life after graduating the school. For a moment, I could feel l am free from the reality and how others see me but also found myself trying to adapt to a new environment. Then I realized that wandering comes as part of our life cycle. At that time, I've read 'Escape from freedom' written by Erich Fromm, and through this sentence; 'This freedom, however, can make people feel unmoored, and is often accompanied by feelings of isolation, fear, and the loss of self'. I imagined an image of water and this part intrigued me start to paint about drifting man with a travelling bag on the sea. The traveling bag reflects "move and escape" but also has deep connection with his life and place. So travelling bag often appear on my painting because it has both meanings of "freedom and belonging". I wanted to express about freedom that we choose as an "escape from the reality" and it brings feelings of inner solitude and weakness being about emotions. These ideas and works at this time became the fundamental concept and directions on recent works. ● It's no longer big news for modern people having frustrations and feeling lack of themselves by the society atmosphere. The melancholy that comes from the gap between others and I or uncontrollable feelings such as solitude are emotions that we feel and accumulated throughout all generations. In relationships with others, we live our lives on repeating to lose and find ourselves. My work also sends out this kind of message. I cut my paintings that based on my inner side and made them into pieces and combined them. Then these combinations turn to some images. I feel it reflects the image of others through my inner self. The images include people around me and celebrities in the media. In my works, the friendly and ordinary people seem strange and unique and the others who I felt like they were unique and special, turned out to be anonymous. The figures, who are the subject and object of the eyes, are become a familiar but unfamiliar group. Even if they didn't form a bond. I wanted to describe us who have to constantly adapt to a given environment, as if we a chameleon. ■ Kim Jin
