이번 전시를 통해 던지는 화두는 생명에 대한 성찰이다. 생명은 나의 오랜 주제였다. 나는 인간과 자연, 생명, 그리고 생로병사의 근원적인 문제에 대해 관심을 두고 작업을 진행해 왔다. 인간이 삶과 죽음을 묻는 것은 자신의 존재와 무(無)를 묻는 것이며 이것이 인간의 본질이기에 이는 우리들의 영원한 관심사이기도 하다. 나는 이러한 인간 근원의 문제에 대해 주로 생물학, 의학적인 관점에서 들여다보고 표현해 왔다.

이전의 작품들이 세포와 단세포 생물 등의 원시적인 생명체를 상징적으로 묘사하면서 생명에 대한 진지한 고찰을 보여주었다면, 이번 작품에서는 생명체의 움직임을 관찰하면서 그 흔적과 발자취를 자유로운 선으로 표현하였다. 때로는 유기체나 인체의 기관을 묘사하면서 생명의 힘찬 역동성을 엿볼 수 있고 한 걸음 물러나서 보면 마치 동양의 산수화를 보는 느낌이기도 하다. 또한, 캔버스 위에 그려진 형상들은 추상적 장면처럼 보이기도 하고 몽환적인 환상을 불러일으키기도 한다.

이는 생명체의 이미지와 움직임을 미시적, 거시적, 상상적, 상징적 방식으로 형상화하는 작업으로 재현된다. 세포로 시작된 하나의 생명체가 하나의 존재로 변화하는 놀라운 과정은 시간을 통해 자신에게 내재된 가능성들을 보여주는 다양한 결과들이다. 나는 주어진 형상마다 재구성되고 재배치되는 생명의 다양한 변주를 그리고자 한다. ■ 현정아

The key theme revolving around this exhibition is the reflection on life. Life has been my theme for a long time. My works have centered around the humanity, nature, life, and fundamental issues of birth, aging, sickness, and death, the four phases of life. The question of humanity about life and death reflects the inquiry about his/her own existence and non-existence, which is the essence and eternal concern of humanity. I have been taking biological and medical perspectives towards those fundamental issues facing the humanity in the course of work creation. ● If previous works symbolically depicted primitive life forms such as cells and unicellular organisms, revealing a serious consideration of life, the current works expressed the traces and footsteps through free lines while observing the motions and movements of living things. Sometimes, they depict the organisms or organs of human body to reveal powerful dynamicity of life, which also give an impression of Oriental landscape painting if they are viewed at a step backward. In that way, the shapes drawn on the canvas are reminiscent of abstract scenes and sometimes evoke dreamlike fantasies. ● That is reproduced through visualization of the living things' images and movements in microscopic, macroscopic, imaginary, and symbolic ways. The marvelous process, in which a living thing which originates from a cell turns into an existence, is a result of various results showing the possibilities inherent in himself/herself through the time. I want to make various variations of life, which are reconstructed and rearranged for each given shape. ■ HYUNJUNGAH
