화면의 풍부한 이미지들은 제반 기억과 이미지 세계의 저장소로부터 비롯된다. 이들 이미지들은 미술사의 이미지들로부터 대중영화, 텔레비전, 광고 그리고 현대의 주류미술 그리고 소설이나 만화의 이미지들에 이르기까지 다양하다. 특히 인상적인 것은 고급소비자들의 사치품 브랜드 네임과 그들의 상표들이 강렬한 메타포로 각인된 작품들이다. 때때로 이 작가는 인간과 동물의 신체를 한 개의 특이한 모습으로 혼합시키기도 한다. 하지만 이 작가는 이들에게 서양 고대에 등장하는 반인반마(켄타우로스)처럼 명백하게 초인간적 속성을 부여하지는 않는다. 오히려 임신한 여자의 신체와 돼지머리의 결합은 최소한 서구문화에 훈련된 눈으로 바라볼 때는 풍자적인 요소로 비추어진다. 마지막으로 그러나 역시 중요한 것으로, 이 여성적 신체가 또한 남자의 머리와 결합되었을 때는, 그의 돌출된 귀는 마치 한 마리의 복어와 같은 인상을 주고 있다. ● 하지만, 이들 매우 다양한 소재의 밀랍인형들은 평면적 차원에서의 이미지들에만 전개되는 것은 아니다. 작가의 손에 의해 단순히 윤곽선으로 처리된 일부 인물들조차도 다른 이미지들을 생산하기 위한 여러 기회들을 제공하고 있다. 왜곡된 신체윤곽선으로부터 아름다운 여인들의 얼굴들이 종종 특수거울에 의해 왜곡된 듯이 나타난다. 하지만 대부분의 경우에 있어서, 이들 이미지들은 앤디 워홀의 ''마릴린 몬로''처럼 이후 오랫동안 현대미술의 아이콘이 된 이전의 헐리우드 영화스타의 양식화된 얼굴들 혹은 사진이미지들의 조각들일 뿐이다.

이동석 회화의 실질적 기반은 캔버스로 제작되었다. 그리고 이 캔버스는 유화로 그려진 이미지 모습들의 유일한 매개체이다. 하지만 지각적으로 그의 회화의 도발적 효과는 캔버스의 물질성을 거의 지워버리고, 감상자로 하여금 오히려 깨진 거울, 소형의 이미지 앙상블로서 다양한 캔버스 조각들의 그림들로 입혀진 찢겨진 종이 혹은 몽타쥬들을 연상하게 만든다. 이들 이미지들의 대담한 불균형성은 또한 이 이미지 구조의 혼돈성을 강조하고 있다. ■ Klaus Honnef

The images that abound on the picture areas come from all sorts of memories and reservoirs of the world of images. They range from images of art history through the images of popular cinema, television, advertising and contemporary mainstream art to the images of graphic novels and mangas. Not to forget the brand names of the leading consumer and luxury goods industry and their trademarks which are stamped into powerful metaphors. Sometimes the artist also blends human and animal bodies into a single bizarre figure. But apparently not to give them, like the Centaurs in Western antiquity, a touch of the superhuman. Rather, his combinations of pregnant women's bodies and pig heads signal - at least in the eye trained by Western culture - a turn into the sarcastic. Last but not least, if the female body also receives once a male head, the salient ear of which makes him look like a blowfish. ● However, not only in the flat dimension of the images unfold the waxworks of the most different motifs. Even some of the figures, which are transformed under the hand of the painter to mere outlines, provide opportunities to produce other images. From the distorted body contours emanate faces of beautiful women, often distorted as if by special mirrors. In most cases, however, they are only fragments of stylized faces or photographic images of former stars of the Hollywood film, who, like Andy Warhol's "Marilyn" (Marilyn Monroe), have long since become icons of contemporary exhibition art. ● The factual basis of Lee Dong Seok paintings is indeed made of canvas, and the canvas is the sole carrier of an image scene in oil paints. But the suggestive effect of the paintings in the perception erases almost the materiality of the canvas and reminds the viewer rather broken mirrors, painted and cut up sheets or montages covered by means of painting of various scraps of canvas as a compact image ensemble. The drastic disproportionality of the images also stresses the conflicts of the image structure. ■ Klaus Honnef
